For those of you that regularly drive into the mountains in the winter, do all wheel drive vehicles really make that much of a difference?  It seems most of the cars you see in accidents are SUVs - I feel they think their cars handle the winter roads better and it gives them too much confidence.  I rarely see Subarus in trouble on the roads.  Can anyone speak to their all wheel drive handling?

Winter driving definitely makes me nervous and actually can keep me from going to the mountains from Boulder in the winter.  Well, that and the awful traffic on the clear days!

I don't know much about SUVs, but Subarus are wonderful on winter roads. My partner has to drive into the mountains almost everyday in the winter and we swap cars for the season so he can use my Subaru. They aren't wonderful for gas mileage, but I'll bet they at least beat most SUVs. I'd say all wheel drive is a good investment if you'd like to get into the mountains in the winter. Other options are snow tires, or chains for more extreme roads. Good luck!
